Tree Sales for Conservation
Our annual tree sale starts in November and goes through APRIL 15th each year.
THE ROLE OF TREES IN CONSERVATION
Planting trees is an effective, environmentally friendly, and aesthetically pleasing way to protect river banks, crops, livestock, wildlife, and even your home.
This year we are jumping into online tree sales! We have decided this is the easiest way to keep our inventory updated and be sure everyone gets a chance to pre-order tree bundles. No more clunky order forms or long phone calls, just order online. Don't worry, we'll still be taking care of our community members that prefer not to shop online by assisting them in placing their order in the office. So if you prefer to pay by cash or check you can stop by and place your order in person at 334 North 9th Street, Columbus MT, Mon-Thurs. 8am-4pm, unless we're in the field, so it's always a good idea to call 406-322-5359 ext 101 and check that we're here before stopping by.
My trees are out of stock.
What do I do?
Just click the out of stock request and let us know that you want to know when we have more and we'll check in with the nurseries and see what we can do.
I don't see what I want on the list, can you check if you can get it?
We are always happy to check. The nurseries we source from only sell trees that are expected to flourish in our area. We are in this for conservation, not landscaping, so it's unlikely we can find you an Umbrella Tree.
Trees are cool, but can I get some flowers please?
Yes! We do have a few flowers on the list, and are hoping to add more.
What if I don't want 25 trees?
We will be opening single tree sales on from April 1st thru April 15th. We will have limited stock on hand to purchase at the office this year. Please order your trees in advance to be sure you get what you need.
What if I need A LOT more than 25 trees?
If you're interested in a large order of trees (250+) we've got a deal for you! Contact us at 406-322-5359 ext 101 or stillwaterconservationdistrict@gmail.com for a discount code and options for replacement trees in 2026. We even have an in house tree expert with NRCS that can help you choose the best options for your area.
How big is a bareroot tree?
These trees are 1-3 years from seed, they are not very big. You can take 200 of them home in your smart car. They are easy to plant and need regular watering for a few years.
What do you mean there's no gaurantees?
The nurseries give us a list, we make an order, we all hope they grow. Sometimes when it comes time to ship or even before then the nurseries will find that they aren't doing well and rather than sell you tree that is likely to die, they will cancel the order. If that happens we will let you know & offer substitutions, or refund your money. Once you pick up your trees we just can't guarantee you they will live. All the water, sunlight, and positive vibes in the world don't always produce a plant, but they will help. We promise to send you home with instructions and happy thoughts. We have had a very high success rate from the nurseries we source and see no reason why that won't continue.
When can I pick up my trees?
Trees will arrive at the District in the first couple weeks of May. We will notify everyone who has ordered as soon as we have a a confirmed delivery date from the nurseries. If your order is sourced from more than one nursery you may have multiple pick up dates.
What if I can't make my pickup date?
The District does not have the space or staff to properly care for your trees for an extended amount of time. Please, if you plan on ordering and may be out of town in May make arrangements with someone to pick them up for you.
Know your zone!
We only sell trees that will do well in our area, but Stillwater County has a large area with serious elevation, precipitation, & soil differences. We are happy to help with suggestions for your specific address if you'd like, just send us an email! stillwaterconservationdistrict@gmail.com
